VSP LASIK coverage: What, why and where?

VSP LASIK coverage
Introduction
Since 1955, VSP has been solely dedicated to providing eye care wellness benefits through an exclusive network of approximately 17,000 independent eye doctors, known as the VSP Select Network. Each Select Network doctor is carefully chosen to represent VSP's commitment to eye health and to providing personalized care. VSP is committed to providing many customers and employees with exceptional customer service, and is recognized by J.D. Power and Associates as the "Highest in Member Satisfaction among National Vision Plans." It must be remembered that most health insurance companies consider laser eye surgery an elective procedure. This means that most, if not all companies will refuse to cover it. However, there could quite few good options for you to consider such as VSP.

What is VSP?
VSP or Vision Service Plan is a provider of comprehensive eye care coverage and eye glass frames to members, eye care professionals and employers. However, this plan is designed to provide a variety of other eye care services as well including LASIK and other types of corrective eye surgery.

What VSP Covers
Benefits generally covered through VSP include:
  • Vision examination, including the test necessary to ensure visual wellness and to detect potential eye-related medical problems;
  • Prescription of corrective lenses when indicated;
  • Single vision, lined bifocal or lined trifocal lenses in glass or plastic;
  • A selection of frames to choose from, up to the plan allowance
  • Contact lenses in place of prescription glasses;
  • Discounts and allowances on lenses and frames, contact lens exam and laser eye surgery

How it works?
The entire cost of the VSP insurance plan is paid by participants, who are responsible for the insurance premiums and applicable copayments for examinations and eyewear. Premiums are paid via bi-weekly pre-tax payroll deductions. The plan generally pays for prescription glasses, contact lenses and laser eye surgery, up to the applicable allowance. Prices are already discounted through VSP (www.vsp.com) network doctors.
  • Employee and dependents covered by the VSP
  • Employee
  • Spouse
  • Registered Domestic Partner
  • Dependent Children & Children (including those of Registered Domestic Partner)
The grant program also enables children who are uninsured to get the eye care they need. More than 50,000 children are helped through the program each year. The program is available nationwide to qualified applicants.

VSP and LASER eye surgery (LASIK) VSP has contracted with many laser surgery facilities and doctors, offering participants access to laser vision correction surgery for hundreds of dollars less than they might pay privately. As for laser eye surgery or procedures, the plan works in two different ways:

i) Through VSP network doctor: You could find the VSP doctor who's right for you at vsp.com/choice or by calling them at 800.400.4569. No referrals or identification cards are needed to see a VSP doctor. Plan pays $100 per eye up to a $200 maximum, plus plan provides discounts averaging 15% on charges not to exceed:
Custom LASIK: $2,300 per eye
LASIK: $1,800 per eye
PRK: $1,500 per eye
Hence, the plan generally pays maximum benefits and offers additional discounts when participants receive services and eyewear from VSP network doctors. Participants pay only a copayment to a VSP doctor for services. VSP will pay the VSP doctor directly according to the plan's agreement with the doctor. In simple words, members of the popular Vision Service Plan (VSP) enjoy benefits regarding pricing of LASIK surgery when they have the surgery performed at a participating facility. On an average, you get 15% off the regular price or 5% off the promotional price. However, tehse discounts only available from VSP-contracted facilities.

ii) Through Non-VSP provider: Vision care services and eyewear may be obtained from any licensed optometrist, ophthalmologist or dispensing optician. Plan reimburses $100 per eye up to a $200 maximum; no discounts available.
