  • LASIK HOAX

If you or someone you love is looking for a competent LASIK surgeon BEWARE... there is a hoax out there. There is a website that claims you do not need a surgeon to receive LASIK surgery. The website is offering a kit claiming patients can perform thee surgery themselves.

The site, Lasik@Home, claims it offers pioneering research in the field of LASIK. It even promotes a Dr. Amir Khadim, M.D. who claims to practice at a well-to-do facility named the Bennett Eye Care Institute in New York. Lasik@Home claims to sell a kit containing everything you need to perform LASIK surgery on your own. The site claims in four easy steps anyone can perform laser refractive surgery.

This site is definitely a case of when it sounds too good to be true, then it is. The order form is not functional, the kit does not exist... and neither does the doctor, though the site does offer paraphernalia, such as coffee mugs and t-shirts, all with the Lasik@Home logo.

    Finding A Competent LASIK Surgeon
If you have an interest in refractive surgery, you must see a qualified refractive surgeon in person. You will schedule an appointment, go in for a thorough eye exam and then sit down and meet with the doctor one-on-one to talk about your needs.

If you see an advertisement anywhere for a low cost or special LASIK procedure, make sure you investigate it thoroughly. Here are some ways to validate the practice:

    • Find out who the practicing physician is.
    • Find out what their credentials are.
    • Find out if they have had any malpractice claims against them.
    • Ask them how many refractive procedures they performed during the last year.
    • Ask them what percentage of patients receive 20/20 vision.
    • Ask them about their billing and insurance policies.
    • Ask for referrals from other patients.

These simple measures may save you a lifetime of inconvenience and pain. Keep in mind also that when it comes to refractive surgery, you don't necessarily want to go with the least expensive provider, you want to go with the best. Many legitimate offices offer financing for patients interested in surgery but short on cash. Do you duty, do your homework, and you should have no problems when seeking a competent professional.
